一個前天文學家的自白

　　自小即對浩瀚穹蒼的奧祕，充滿興趣。赴美國哥倫比亞大學物理系攻讀時，遂改唸天文，當時曾以四年多的時間，晨昏日夜，使用位於紐約市區的全世界最小的無線電望遠鏡（直徑1.2公尺）。獲得博士學位後，應聘至麻州大學天文系研究，轉而操作當時全美最大的微波無線電望遠鏡，圓盤直徑14公尺，該天文台座落在水源保護區內，周圍十數公里，只有野鹿和野狼相伴。曾在冬夜初雪之時，獨自駕吉普車在赴天文台的路上打滑，幾乎釀成車禍；也曾在大雪之夜，意外被反鎖在天文台外……但午夜夢迴，終究不悔有此經歷。或許一瓶老酒，幾碟小菜，我會告訴你更多的故事。

The spectacular pictures are the culmination of 20 years of observation by a dozen radio astronomers and 22 Ph.D. students directed by Prof. Patrick Thaddeus using a 1.2-m millimetre-wave telescope. These images have three to four times higher resolution and between five and 10 times higher sensitivity than previous maps of our galaxy. I am proud to be one of the contributors.
